What does it mean?

These are the total masses of oyster mushrooms that were harvested from all three 6th and 7th grade classrooms:

Control           10 ml. oil               20 ml. oil             30 ml. oil

19.6 grams        69.0 grams              54.8 grams           42.9 grams

1. Describe the difference between the mass of control mushrooms and those that were treated with motor oil.

2. Do you think the data shows random variation or do you think the motor oil promoted mushroom growth? What makes you think this?

3. Describe another experiment that could be done with oyster mushrooms or another bioremediator to test their pollution cleaning ability in an environment of your choosing (soil, a saltmarsh, river or marine environment).

1). The diffrence between the control and the mass is that the number went up.
2). I think the oil promoted the mushroom growth because after our experiment, they grew.
3). Mangroves and pullotion can be another experiment to test to know how much pullution is in the environment.

I Like This Experiment Very Much!!!:D
    -Wahhhh Emmm :D

  3. Gianna B says:

    - The control mushroom weighed about 20g , which was the least out of all of the mushrooms . When oil was added to the mushroom , the mass was greater than the control for 10mL , 20mL, and 30mL of oil .
    - I think that the motor oil did promote mushroom growth . There was a big change of the mushroom’s mass when oil was added . Every single mushroom that had oil added to it grew , the 10mL of oil grew the most , at about 70g .
    - Another experiment that could be done is using ragweed instead of mushrooms. We can do the same exact thing that we did with the mushrooms with ragweed .

I am really proud of all the great thinking you are doing. Isn’t it great that math is so important in science! I know you all have the ability to look at numbers and notice great things.
    keep up the good work!
    Miss B.

i think that there is a difference between the mass of the control and the mushrooms treated with motor oil. i think this because in observations it stated that the more oil, the more light it becomes

  6. Elena H says:

    1. The control was about 20g and
the mushroom with 10mL of oil was about 70g. The difference is by about 50g between the mushrooms.
    2. I think the motor oil promoted mushroom growth because the control grew less than the one with 10mL f oil.
    3. Another experiment that could be done with oyster mushrooms can be to take 10mL of oil, put it in a bag with oyster mushrooms, and see if it absorbs.

  7. Jonathan S says:

    1. The control was about 20g and the 10ml was about 70g. The 20ml is 55g and the 30ml is 45g. There is greater mushroom mass in all of the motor oil mushrooms then the control.
    2. I think that this shows that motor oil promotes the mushroom growth because there is signifigant change of growth in all the motor oil mushrooms.
    3. Another experiment that could be done is putting banana peels into water contaminated by heavy metals. The banana’s can then purify the water so it is clear of heavy metals.

    1) The diffrence between the control and the 10ml of oil is 49 grams. The diffrence between the control and 20ml of oil is 35 grams. The diffrence between control and 30ml of oil is 23 grams.
    2) I think the motor oil promoted the growth of the blue oyster mushrooms because they had a bigger mass when they had motor oil.

  9. Pedro O says:

1.) The difference between the mass of the control and the mushrooms that were treated with oil is that they had more mass then the control.
2.) I think it did because according to the masses, all of the mushrooms that treated with oil, had more mass.
3.) We could use a glass box and cover a little garden with planted mushrooms in it. Then we could use the other side for a motor oil pool. And each day, we could measure how much the mushrooms absorb the motor oil.

  10. Ashley says:

    1) The mass of the control was very low compared to the tested mushrooms which was fairly high .

    2) I think the motor oil did have an effect on the growth of the mushrooms growth because when they put the oil in the tested mushroom the growth was a huge differnce than the conrol.

    3) Anthor expperiment we can do is get 5 mushrooms and put 5 differnet types of oils and see which one killes the mushroom and wich one helps the mushroom.

  11. Elisabeth B says:

1 The control mushrooms, had the lightest mass, with 19.6 grams, and the heavest was the 10 ml, with 69 grams. The difference was 49.4 grams.

2 The mushrooms that were treated with motor oil, were not promoted, almost prohibited. They had less and less mass with more of the oil.

3 We could use sunflowers, to clean polluted soil. Like the mushrooms, we could test different quantities of motor oil.
